Blizzard Insurance: Tips to Reduce Damages

Winter is on its way, and a blizzard or two might very well be in the forecast.

Your homeowners insurance generally will cover the roof damage, burst pipes and wind damage that blizzards may cause.

However, blizzards might exacerbate pre-existing problems in your home. Insurance providers might argue that you failed to take care of a problem property. They may therefore may reduce a provided amount or deny you a payout. a house covered in snow in front of a brick building

You should always be on the lookout for potential problems. Blizzard conditions could exacerbate these problems. You can take steps to rectify them.

  • Keep your trees pruned and cut back from your house. Have dead trees cut and removed to keep blizzards from bringing limbs or whole trees down on your roof.

  • Maintain your pipes and take steps so they do not freeze. You should let faucets lightly drip, because running water keeps it from freezing. You can also keep a heat source, like a space heater, near exposed pipes.

  • Make repairs to your roof before winter. Snow on a damaged roof can cause a collapse and massive damage. During good weather, make sure that your roof is not damaged, old or in need of repairs.

  • Secure loose outdoor items before a blizzard. High winds can cause items to become airborne, damaging windows and siding.

There are many other damages that blizzards can cause to home. It is a good idea to take stock of potential hazards before severe weather moves in.

As always, you should take proper steps to de-ice your surfaces, heat your home, and prepare for electricity loss. You will be protecting your home, in addition to your person in the event of a blizzard.
